Tell me the truth: do you know why every year, on the last Saturday of August, our town suddenly fills up with hundreds of roaring motorcycles?

The streets come alive, helmets shine in the sun, and it almost looks like a huge engine festival.

But... do you know the real reason?

Everyone thinks it is just for the big celebrations in honor of San Rocco, Maria SS. Assunta, and our beloved Santa Maria Goretti.

The truth is that those motorcycles are there for a special mission: they act as a loud and joyful guard of honor to welcome the relic of a young Saint who arrives from far away, from the Marche region, from the town of Corinaldo!

And do you know who made sure that all this happened right here in our town?

Today I am going to tell you an incredible story that goes all the way back to the 1950s. I remember it well, because as you know, back then I was silent and still inside the stone of our ancient Portale, keeping my eyes wide open over San Benedetto dei Marsi.

And that is when I met him: Giovanni Di Genova, whom everyone in town affectionately called Ciuffelitte.

Giovanni was a simple man, a farmer with hands made rough by work, but with a huge heart. And what happened to him one night?

He had a dream, but not just any dream.

A little girl with sweet eyes appeared to him. She held his hand and whispered a special request: "Build me a home here, build a sanctuary where people can pray and find peace." I, from my stone niche, could hear Giovanni tossing and turning in his bed until early morning, with that dream still printed in his eyes.

He could have said: "But who am I to build a church? I am just a humble farmer."

But no.

Giovanni believed in it with all his heart. He didn't know who the little girl was, and when he told the town what had happened, most people didn't believe him. Some even tried to talk him out of it and made fun of him.

But who was that little girl, really?

He started searching with every tool he had, until the mystery was revealed to Giovanni by none other than Padre Pio himself, a Franciscan friar who later became a Saint too! He told him: the little girl was Maria Goretti, a brave young girl who chose to forgive.

And so Giovanni finally had a goal, his journey could continue.

I remember him packing his bag, ready to travel on a moped all the way to the distant lands of Nettuno, in the Lazio region, to meet Marietta's family, her mom, and her brothers.

When he came back, he brought with him a small statue of Maria Goretti, which is still kept in our sacristy today.

In the following years, I can see him knocking on the doors of San Benedetto and the neighboring towns together with the few friends who had chosen to help him. He collected every single donation with infinite patience, day after day, smile after smile, to make the young Saint's dream come true.

Thanks to Giovanni's good-hearted stubbornness, that little church was actually born, and on the day it opened, Marietta's family was invited, too. There was a massive celebration in San Benedetto dei Marsi!

Marietta's brothers and sisters came to San Benedetto every year for the festival from that moment on. Over time, thanks to the help of our priest don Francesco, that little wooden church became the Sanctuary we all know today.

It is from there that, every summer, the motorcyclists start roaring their engines in celebration to welcome the Saint's relic... but how did the motorcycle tradition begin?

We already mentioned that Santa Maria Goretti's relic arrived from Corinaldo, and before getting here, it had to pass through Pescina. In those years, the priest was don Domenico. Without telephones or smartphones, to know the exact moment to start the procession to welcome the Saint, he would always send children on bicycles to wait until the relic arrived at la Corda. Then, they would race back to tell him when it was time to leave.

Over the years, the number of bicycles grew, then they became mopeds, until we reached the majestic parade we see today: the noise and the revving of the motorcycles are the participants' way of clapping and welcoming young Marietta with enthusiasm and faith.

You have to know that I carry inside me the same stone, the same earth, and the same memory of Giovanni's dream. A story of courage, prayer, and wishes that, if you truly believe in them, can even become reality.

But do you know what the best part is? It's that this isn't some old story that only belongs in books. It is a tradition that still lives today on our streets, and it belongs to all of us. In 2003, the actress Martina Pinto, who played Santa Maria Goretti in a Rai TV movie, came to visit our town and celebrated her 14th birthday right here with us!

In 2012, San Benedetto dei Marsi hosted the body of Santa Maria Goretti for a few days, with a huge festival that involved the whole community.

Even today, on the Saturday of the festival, Giovanni's family has its own traditions that they quietly carry on year after year.

They prepare the little church and carefully arrange all the objects like a true ritual. They do this together with our friend Patrizia, who, ever since she was a little girl, has been decorating the statue with her loved ones before the procession.

If you ever find yourself near the Sanctuary while they are setting up the statue, they will gladly tell you the story of papone Giuannine and how our beautiful tradition was born.

Invece no.
